It is unusual, I guess, to make the final issue of a series a "pick of the week". In the case of Legion Of Superheroes #125, however, it is both an end and a beginning. The Legion is a group that has long enjoyed some of the most devoted fans in all of comicdom. Most of them can recite it's long and convoluted history without any hesitation. Ironically, DC Comics feels that the book now suffers in sales because of that very perception. Too many fans apparently see Legion Of Superheroes as a book that is only for the older fan who has been reading it for a couple of decades. To remedy this, DC plans to end the titles (This one as well as its' companion title "Legionnaires) and launch the massive "Legion Lost" mini series which they promise will put new fans on the same footing as old ones.
As one of those afformentioned "old fans" I've been through this before, it seems. This will be only the latest time we've seen the Legion restarted or rebooted or reconfigured. The Legions strength lies in its' resiliancy and it manages to stay pretty fresh with each upheaval. Fans who wish to sample the Legion with the upcoming "Legion Lost" series would do well to pick up the last couple of issues of this series, as it sets up the events which will be chronicled there. It's finale in #125, "Widening Rifts" finds the very galaxy in dire peril from a space tear which threatens to consume both the Legionnaires and most of our end of the galaxy as well.
You really don't need any more set up than that, as this issue is a fast paced, slam-bang finale to the series run. It gives you little time to catch your breath and wonder just which of the Legion will live and which will perish. It's not the end of the Legion, but it could actually be the end of the Legion as we have come to know it. Either way, its' edge-of-the-seat excitement is a terrific way to go. Much as I hate re-starts, this one could be the beginning of a new generation of Legion fans. That would certainly make the agonizing two month wait before "Legion Lost" hits the stands more bearable.
