When we last left the Legion Of Superheroes, they were being sucked into the event horizon of a space tear. As they have often done, they were sacrificing themselves to save the galaxy. This new maxi-series picks up an indefinately long period of time after that, in a corner of space so distant, even Braniac 5.1 has no idea where they are. They actaully don't even make their appearance until page 15 of the story, at which point they immediately get caught in a struggle between two alien races.
Let me admit up front, I am a Legion addict. Good ideas and characters stand the test of time, and the Legion has weathered many different incarnations and directions. In recent years, the books rabid fans have scared new readers away from the book and it's long, conplicated history. This series is an attemp to put old fans and new ones on the same ground. On that leval, it succeeds admirably. As an old fan, I felt comfortable jumping right in to the story, but I think anyone not familier with the Legion will have no trouble with the new direction.
Legion Lost is written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, the same team that tore the Legion to shreds in the final issues of its regular series. The Art by Oliver Coipel has much the same look as those issues, but also has a more organic approach, which suits the other-galaxy feel to the story. This issue is more set up than anything else. The Legion doesn't even appear until the book is two-thirds over. By the time the issue is over, hovever, you are ready to learn more. Such is the mark of a good story. If you have always wanted to try the Legion, but were afraid of the books history and large cast, this is your chance comic fans. The rest is up to you.
