this year (already?) |

wow, here it is 2010 and we have a literal cornicopia of nothing to watch this summer, There was Alice in Wonderland (released in march with no competition in case it failed miserably) and How to tame your dragon (same reason) which were both good but with the plethera of nada this summer, they would still clean up. Now we have Iron Man 2, ok, and the first runner and nothing running against it, the sands of time thing (Zzz) Shrek 4 (which was surprisingly better than I hoped it would be(sad that is how we rate movies now), Toy Story 3 (which was Awsome). A surprise for me was Knight and Day, a Tom Cruise thing which was rather decent but it seems the prebuzz it failed to generate turned into prehaterbuzz which is really cruel and unfair cause its so much better than Killers ( a romantic comedy that starts to fail once the bickering starts (why is bickering a part of the Romace, I hated that as a kid when my parents did it (they still do and you should see how fast they clear a room when they start), ). Some people are still holding out for Inception (looks and sounds promising from Dark Knight Chris Nolan) and Salt (Angelina Jolie trying to show that she is still revelant). Jonah Hex was ok, but I also didnt get to see all of it and part of my mind casts back to Wild Wild West which is an unfair comparison, I think the problem with that is they didnt let it be itself, and so it gets lost trying to prove that it is something (and Megan Fox continueing her 'I dont need Transformers to be star' downhill slide). I think a lot of critics are just pre blathering to try and seem like they are relevant when actually they are just flameboys behind a a keyboard, I'm reminded of when Speed Racer was called a bomb because they couldnt wait to drag down the Wakowski Bro's, when its a victim of bad timing comeing between Indy 4 and Iron Man 1, I still watch that movie over and over again, just cause its that good, or that guilty of a pleasure. Still it looks like there is nothing this year till Harry Potter comes out in Nov/Dec *sigh*

Did you catch Harry Brown? Or Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day? Harry Brown had a limited release in theaters, and I don't beleive BS 2 was realesed at all in theaters, but both are very good (I personally enjoyed Harry Brown more than BS 2, but that's just me).

I agree that Iron Man 2 was basically just ok. I actually liked it better than Alice in Wonderland, though, which I thought was weighted down by its very style.
Already I am far ahead of my average 1-2 movies a year. So I figure one more flick is about all I can do.
Oddly enough, it turned out to be Predators. Now, I never saw either of the first two Predators. It's not really my cup of tea. But I enjoyed the new one quite a bit. Perhaps it was context - I saw it at the world premiere in Austin. It was a large theater and the crowd was really into it, cheering the big scenes and applauding key moments - all of which might have made it seem better than it was.
Certainly it had a couple of tiny plot holes (and by "tiny" I mean...well, "large"). But it was really designed to provide thrills, not provoke reflection on the meaning of life.
Inception does look promising, however. to me it looks like a cross between Dreamscape and Dark City - and how many people remember either of those?

*raises hand* I remember both, and I still think about Dark City from time to time. Yes Preditors was much better than I expected. It looks like a nice reboot, and speaking of reboots, James Bond is dead. MGM in its financial peril has pulled the plug on the current James Bond film

Dark City ranks as one of my all time favorite films (not THE favorite, mind you,, just up there).
I really think it doesn't get its due. I suspect it just went above too many people's heads.
By the way - you can find Michael's review of the Predator World Premier at www.avpgalaxy.net

and speaking of Dark City, Inception is out. Its one of those that you cant give away the ending cause you dont want to spoil it for others (and having said that, have I said too much) . Its a movie about dreams, and I'm always a sucker for those. Its got Leo DeCaprio in it and he does a pretty good job. The trailer takes all the flashy parts of the movie and throws them at you but the pace of the movie is much more leisurely and I enjoyed that fact. The ending may comfuse some people (so I have heard) but it made perfect sense to me, especially considering the clues peppered thru out the movie, but I read Gene Wolf books and I can sometimes keep up with those (Soldier in the Mist, get it now). The visuals are good, the story is very layered which may lose some people but if you liked Dark City, I think you will like this , but I think Inception is pretty much the last hurra for the summer. Salt is supposed to come out soon, but I'm in no hurry to see that.

I saw Inception the other day, and I agree that is is both layered and very good.
However, I didn't see the ending confusing at all. If it is as I interpreted, it is pretty straight forward (and it's all about whether you think the top is still spinning as the screen goes to black - looked to me like it was toppling).
My 10 year old son was bored during it, even during the fight scenes inside a spinning hotel. so, yeah, it's not a movie for people who don't like to think, and it felt just a tad long, but otherwise I thought it was really good.

Oh, no, not another movie about people who get into other peoples' dreams! I watch one that had a similar plot a couple of years ago (Paprika, and it was baaad, like dead cat smell baaad), and it put me off the whole concept.

And not another action movie with Jolie in it!! Man, can she doe anything other than shallow action movies? I'm starting to wonder....
